I've been hearing a male voice from the apartment building behind my work for the last few weeks erupting in anger spontaneously, "SHUT UP!" I've never heard any other voice until today when I heard what sounded to me like a woman crying. Not just crying, not just sobbing, not quite screaming. Noises of regression and pain. The images in my head that I try to memory match with the sounds aren't pretty ones, but then again maybe it's a very loud tv, maybe it's my imagination, as people often say, often explain away. "Oh, that wasn't what you thought you heard/saw; it was just a family argument." Yeah.
The bitch of it is, apartments--it's often impossible to tell where noise is coming from even when it's happening.
So I think I'll be taking a walk this evening, looking at addresses. Don't worry, I won't be playing the part of the hero this evening. If I see or hear anything conclusive, I'll call the police. I just want a look around.
EDIT: Nothing to say. I took my walk and noted the most likely addresses to where I would point the police (just based on where I believe the sounds to be coming from), the date and time, and will continue to note days and times if they should arise.

I've been in that, "what is the real picture here?" position before of listening and matching sounds. Blech.
Especially when source is hard to pin down or cops are hard to get there at the right moment.
Hope you find it, or find a solution that's workable.

Wishing you safety and reassurance. And if it turns out that someone else needs the same, wishing it for them, too.
